GLIMPSE Data & Document Release - 20050415 ===================================================================== 1. Overview ===================================================================== The GLIMPSE 20050415 data release is comprised of IPAC tables of the GLIMPSE Catalog and Archive for the entire GLIMPSE Survey (l=10-65 deg, 295-350 deg, b=+- 1 deg) plus the Observation Strategy Validation (OSV) region at about l=284 deg. These source lists REPLACE all previously delivered GLIMPSE source lists. The highly reliable GLIMPSE Catalog (GLMC) consists of point sources that are detected at least twice in one band and at least once in an adjacent band and a S/N > 5 cut for the band with the two detections. There are also faint and bright flux limits on the Catalog entries. The more complete Archive (GLMA) has less stringent criteria, namely two detections in any bands, those detections having a S/N > 5. See the GLIMPSE Data Products Document for more details. There are about 30.2 million sources in the GLIMPSE Catalog and about 47.7 million in the GLIMPSE Archive. =================== Source statistics =================== AREA # in Catalog # in Archive ------- ------------ ------------ North Totals 15,422,729 23,444,320 South Totals 14,829,960 24,277,927 North+South 30,252,689 47,722,247 Note that one cause of false sources in the source lists is imperfect muxbleed correction in the SSC pipeline leaving faint point-like sources every four pixels along a row from a bright source in Bands 1 & 2. Most of the muxbleed sources have signal-to-noise less than 5 and do not make it into the source lists. Very few false sources due to muxbleed are found in high background areas (e.g. in the inner Galaxy). We estimate that < 0.4% of the Catalog sources may be muxbleed. We estimate that < 2% of the Archive sources may be muxbleed due to our less stringent selection criteria. The false detections due to muxbleed will be in only Bands 1 & 2. We plan to flag and/or correct potential muxbleed sources in future data releases. Another instance of false detections in the Archive occurs in regions surrounding saturated stars where the GLIMPSE source extractor may find false sources in the wings of the PSF. These sources are culled from the Catalog but only flagged in the Archive. Our source selection criteria remove the vast majority of other potential false detections, such as cosmic rays and stray light. In addition, our photometry iteration routines reduce false source detections in variable backgrounds caused by both real sky variations as well as instrumental artifacts such as banding, stray light and column pulldown. ===================================================================== 2. Changes since the 20050211 data release. ===================================================================== A. RA, Dec to l,b and l,b to RA & Dec now consistent, which means a slight change to RA & Dec from the previous data release. l and b are the same. B. The magnitudes and delta magnitudes have an extra digit to the right of the decimal place, and also the null values for those fields have an extra digit (99.999). C. We fixed a problem where sources were getting into the Catalog that shouldn't have been - in single visit areas (the upper and lower latitude edges and the longitude edges-see section 4B below). This affected about 1.4% of the Catalog sources. ===================================================================== 3. Files in the GLIMPSE 20050415 Release. ===================================================================== A. GLIMPSE.20050415.README - This file. B. Catalog & Archive Files in IPAC Table Format The GLMC*tbl and GLMA*tbl files have been gzipped. The gzipped size totals about 7.3 Gigs. Unzipped they are about 39 Gigs. Catalog files - 15 Gigs Archive files - 24 Gigs The Catalog and Archive are broken into 1 deg x ~2 deg areas for the SURVEY region. There are 115 Catalog IPAC table files and 115 Archive IPAC table files. * Due to not observing an AOR, there is missing strip of data, about 0.12 deg wide, diagonal to the Galactic plane from about l=300.6 to 306.85 deg. (We are re-scheduling the observation.) C. Data Dictionary for IPAC Tables GLMC.tbl.dd (same as previous version) GLMA.tbl.dd (exactly the same as GLMC.tbl.dd) D. Documentation GLIMPSE Data Products Document v1.5: glimpse_dataprod_v1.5.pdf, glimpse_dataprod_v1.5.ps We updated the Catalog criteria section (section 2.3) of the Data Products Document. We added a discussion of false sources to the Validation section (section 3) (which is repeated in the Overview section of this README file). ===================================================================== 4. Miscellaneous Information ===================================================================== A. SSC pipeline versions used for the GLIMPSE data in this data release are S9.5.0 - l306-322 deg S10.0.1 - l322-338 deg S10.0.3 - OSV, l025-040 deg S10.5.0 - l295-306, l337-350, l010-025, l040-065 deg B. The nominal GLIMPSE Survey region is l=10-65 deg, 295-350 deg; b= +- 1 deg. Due to the nature of the survey mapping, there are areas outside of the nominal survey region that were observed (and may have incomplete coverage). There is a small amount of IRAC coverage from l=9.8-10 deg, l=65-65.3 deg, l=294.8-295 deg and l=350-350.3 deg. Also, we provide whatever sources detected from b=1.0 to 1.15 deg and b=-1.0 to -1.15 deg. C. Besides missing the AOR from l=300-307 deg, there were a few (~40 out of 317,000) frames that were missing or bad. These will be re-observed but this will affect the sources included in the Catalogs/Archives for those small areas. ===================================================================== 5. How to download the data ===================================================================== login to our anonymous ftp site ftp ftp.astro.wisc.edu cd outgoing/meade/ssc/20050412 There is an Archives directory and a Catalogs directory containing the IPAC tables.
